Perpetuum Immobile (2026), by Pum van de Koppel

In the video Perpetuum Immobile Pum van de Koppel stumbles in wooden clogs in the middle of the night, appropriating the Dutch symbol of the agricultural worker by not traversing any ground. The Artist in Residence is exempted from the rhythms of daily life and instead may dance on depressing techno, savouring what unhappiness can cultivate without a clear direction.

Pum van de Koppel took the loneliness he faced as Artist in Residence (at Bierumer School) as subject. Suddenly devoid of a social context and in an unfamiliar rural area, he wondered what then constitutes being human, and turned to his relationship with technology. He failed to formulate a positivist answer to his inquiry and instead carefully held on to a newfound distance. The distance between Bierum and The Hague (where he normally lives), between resident and surrounding and between inventor and device.
